Garaventa's Integrated Handrails Keep Stairways Safe for Pedestrian Traffic and Keep Building Inspectors Happy

Model building codes and ADAAG require handrails of a prescribed height and diameter along the entire length of the stairway for use by stairway pedestrians. The installation of an inclined platform lift, which often attaches directly to the stairway wall or around the central core, may necessitate removal of the handrail or balustrade. This could lead to a potential building code compliance issue.

Fortunately, this is rarely a problem when Garaventa lifts are chosen. This is because both the curving Garaventa GSL Artira and the straight Xpress II can be supplied with integrated handrails. In fact, if aesthetics are a major consideration, Garaventa can even build a custom handrail for the opposite side of the stairway to match the handrail that is integrated with the lift.

Most codes, including ADAAG, require that handrails be 1¼ to 1½ inches in diameter. The top of the handrail surface must be between 34 and 38 inches above the stair nosing.

The Garaventa GSL Artira uses tubular guide rails that are spaced 24 inches apart and have a diameter of 2 inches. The smooth design of the back of the Garaventa platform (no drive machinery) allows us to locate a third tube, between these main guide tubes, that serves as a handrail. It is within the prescribed handrail height range and the diameter of this handrail tube is 1½ inches. By designing the platform park position away from the stairs at the upper and lower landing, access to this handrail is continuous throughout the stairway. This arrangement will satisfy any inspector.

In the case of the Xpress II lift for straight stairways, the integrated handrail is mounted on the top of the upper aluminum guide rail. It also has a diameter of 1 ½ inches. Due to the geometry of the rails, the height of the handrail varies according to stair angle. Garaventa can supply a table showing the height.

If stairway handrail removal is an issue in your area, choose a Garaventa lift with integrated handrails. Be sure to specify that the handrails must have a code compliant diameter of no more than 1½ inches. If continuous handrails are required then select a Garaventa GSL Artira and locate platform parking at the upper and lower landings away from the stairs.
